EMDR is a therapeutic approach for treating emotionally distressing life events or emotional difficulties that people may be exposed to or experience during the course of their lives. For example, when a person is very upset, their brain cannot process information as it ordinarily does. One moment can seemingly become “frozen in time” and remembering a trauma may feel as bad as going through it the first time because the images, sounds, smells, and feelings haven’t changed. Such memories can leave a lasting negative imprint that interferes with the way a person sees the world and the way they relate with other people (Source: EMDRIA, 2009, 2011).

Research shows that EMDR seems to have a direct effect on the way that the brain processes information (EMDRIA, 2011). A person still remembers the event and what happened, but it does not feel as upsetting. Many types of therapies have similar goals. I am a Certified Therapist through the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA). I discuss with clients whether I think this approach may be helpful for them, as part of a comprehensive treatment planning process, and we will work collaboratively together for what may be in your best interest and well-being.
